About the Organization

Incorporated in 1994, True North Properties was formed by two friends who originally met in Cape Dorst. Throughout the nineties, we built houses, duplexes and row housing in Cape Dorset, Kimmirut, Qikiqtarjuaq and Iqaluit as part of the public housing new construction market.

For the last ten years, we have specialized in maintenance, renovation and institutional work and have also broadened services from strictly commercial services to addressing homeowners needs and specializing in interior renovations, retrofits, and house additions.

A New Opportunity Awaits

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a General Manager to join our team in Iqaluit, Nunavut. You will be joining a small, family-orientated team that has been kept small for a reason, to concentrate on the relationships that we have with our customers. 

In this role, you will be responsible for revenue generation, cost and quality control, customer satisfaction and retention and the overall performance of the company. 

In the customer-facing element of this role, you will be responsible for customer contact and care, queries, quotes, assisting in material selection, job delivery, quality control, schedule and budget. Sales and marketing tasks are an integral part of this position.

While for the in-house element of this role, you will supervise, mentor, direct and control the company’s crew of carpenters, renovators, maintainers and assistants. You will plan, assign, assist and supervise all aspects of the company’s projects, including coordinating and scheduling subtrades, developing clear and concise Scopes of Work, establishing labour budgets, labour performance, overall cost control, adherence to budget and establishing sales and profitability goals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Determining and translating customer wishes and wants into concrete proposals and work plans
  • Ensuring that the customer has access to the most appropriate and current materials available on the market
  • Ensuring that the job/project is accurately and completely priced, that the job/project budget is approved by the customer and that the Scope of Work (Quote) is authorized/accepted by the customer prior to the start of the job/project
  • Liaise between on site crew and customer, ensure clear and concise communication and direction is delivered to the crew based on customer decisions and stipulations
  • Responsible for Supplier contact, ordering, shipping and follow-up in regard to discrepancies in pricing or quantities
  • Responsible for the Company’s annual sealift re-supply including determining quantities, type, quality, logistics and receiving/storing of bulk items
  • Ensuring all the Company’s PPE meets industry standards, are up to date and in good condition
  • Ensuring that proper safety protocols, procedures and required equipment are available
  • Ensuring that all the Company’s sub-contractors comply with current safety standards and procedures
  • Travelling in small planes, in hazardous conditions, to any community, as required
  • Being the Company’s senior on-call person which will entail receiving after-hours phone calls and determining whether such calls need immediate action or can be deferred
  • Invoicing all company work and assisting in collecting the outstanding amounts including liaising with customers in regard to deficiencies or warranty work
  • Conducting annual staff appraisals, wage and bonus reviews, promotions and individual discipline where necessary

To be successful in this role you will ideally have either a Journeyman’s Certificate or Red Seal qualification in one of the building trades or can demonstrate an equivalency, combined with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the private sector as a General Manager or Supervisor, leading teams with diverse skill sets. 

You will also possess:

  • Extensive experience with renovation, maintenance and construction
  • Direct experience in managing and delivering construction projects
  • Direct customer-relations experience including customer care, experience with sales negotiations and collections
  • Class 5 Drivers License

Our ideal candidate for this role will be comfortable in a cross-cultural setting and will encourage and comply with the company’s diversity policies and objectives of hiring locally and enhancing local skills and development while also possessing a knowledge of the logistical restraints of Nunavut, or a similarly remote location.

You will be proficient in English and have excellent oral and written communication skills, team building and leadership skills. A military background is a distinct plus. 

Please note, you must be able to obtain, with assistance from the company, an enhanced security rating from, but not limited to, Public Works and Government Services Canada; Transport Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. 

The COO will be required to achieve and maintain the following security clearances:

  • Federal Clearance, Top Secret
  • RCMP Clearance Facility Access Level B
  • Restricted Airport Security Pass (Red Pass)
