Heiltsuk Kaxla Society (HKS) is a non-profit, Aboriginal child and family services agency located on the BC central coast. HKS serves the Heiltsuk people by delivering child and family services. About Bella Bella

The island village of Bella Bella is located on Campbell Island, north of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, and about 3 kilometers north of McLoughlin Bay.

The community has 1,500 people with full access to a large range of outdoor activities centered on the ocean, a daycare, elementary school, high school, hospital, BC Ferries route, airport, RCMP station.

Located on the central coast in the middle of the Great Bear Rainforest, this area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing, camping, kayaking, and whale watching.

Heiltsuk Kaxla Society has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and understanding Support Services Social Worker to join our close-knit team on a full-time basis. 

Reporting to the Director of Practice, you will be responsible for monitoring care homes, supporting families, and collaborating with a variety of stakeholders to ensure that the highest level of care and support is provided to the Heiltsuk Kaxla Society caregivers. 

More specifically, some of your key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Recruiting resources, facilitating placements, providing orientation/training and financial support to caregivers
  • Conducting SAFE home studies, monitoring and maintaining standards for care homes and completing annual reviews
  • Maintaining timely and accurate case management and quality of service
  • Identifying and referring caregivers to resources and supports
  • Advocating for caregivers benefits and services as applicable
  • Developing internal and external publications and documents as needed
  • Organizing and/or participating in caregiver recruitment, training events, professional development and agency/team meetings
  • Working collaboratively with the Executive Director, Director of Practice, Child Safety Team, the Ministry of Child and Family Development and a variety of other service providers
  • Other related duties as required

To qualify for this role, you will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Child & Youth Care, Social Work or a related field combined with a minimum C3 Designation and at least 2 years of experience in the child welfare field, family services or child and youth care industry. 

A strong understanding of child welfare systems is important, as are the following:

  • SAFE Certification (preferred)
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, recent driver’s abstract
  • An understanding of the impact of colonization on Aboriginal people
  • Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn about the Heiltsuk Nation, culture, traditions and values
  • The ability to work collaboratively and establish positive working relationships with a variety of teams/groups, community members, organizations and other stakeholders
  • Time management skills with the ability to multitask different tasks simultaneously
  • Well-developed written, oral, interpersonal and organizational skills

This role is well suited to an organized individual who has the ability to work under pressure and meet competing deadlines. Outstanding problem solving and communication skills are essential.
