The Municipality of Pangnirtung
Located on beautiful Baffin Island, Nunavut, Pangnirtung became a self governing municipal government in 1973. Today, Pangnirtung is a vibrant community of 1,800 residents that is known world-wide for its carvings, tapestries and prints. Surrounded by mountains, glaciers and with access to Auyuittuq National Park, Pangnirtung is equally as famous for its truly spectacular scenery.
With a full complement of infrastructure and resources, including medical centre, schools and shops, Pangnirtung is also only one of three Nunavut communities with a fish processing plant and a robust Arctic Char and Greenlandic Turbot Fishery. As such, Pangnirtung boasts a small craft harbour.

About the Opportunity
The Municipality of Pangnirtung has an opportunity for a Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic to join their team in Pangnirtung, Nunavut.
Responsibilities include:
- Carrying out direct maintenance and repairs on all municipal controlled vehicles and equipment
- Instructing staff and apprentices
- Carrying out scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs
- Conducting regular inspections of vehicles/equipment to identify any repairs required
- Completing work in accordance with works orders, plans, and standards
- Assisting in preparation and overseeing of repair projects, tenders, and annual sealift orders
- Ensuring request for shipments of materials and supplies are processed properly
- Ensuring material and supplies received are in accordance with what the purchase order states
- Maintaining accurate records are kept in relation to maintenance, repairs, and inventory
In order to qualify for this role, you must have a valid Red Seal Certificate in Heavy Equipment. A Certificate in Automotive Mechanics is an asset but is not required.
You must also have a valid Class 5 driver’s license. A Class 3 with airbrakes endorsement is also an asset. Please note you must be able to work overtime when required.
The following are assets, but are not required:
- Knowledge of purchasing procedures and inventory control
- Knowledge of MMOS
You will do well in this role if you are reliable and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently. Above all, you must be able to meet deadlines and maintain safety standards. The ability to deal tactfully and cooperatively with public and staff is important. Similarly, the ability to accept considerable responsibility and handle heavy workloads is essential.
