About Mallee CMA

The Mallee Catchment Management Authority (Mallee CMA) was established in 1997 by the Victorian Government under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 and is the largest catchment area in Victoria, running along the Murray River from Nyah to the South Australian border, and south to the vast dryland cereal and wheat crops of the Wimmera.

The primary responsibility of Mallee CMA is to ensure that natural resources in the region are managed in an integrated and ecologically sustainable way. The organisation has project responsibilities that include the management of:

  • Waterways;
  • Biodiversity (including vegetation restoration and threatened species recovery);
  • Floodplains;
  • Salinity; and
  • Land and soil health.

Mallee CMA now has an exciting opportunity for a driven Public Relations Manager, to join their team based in Mildura, VIC on a permanent full-time basis. 

Reporting to the General Manager - Operations and Community, the Public Relations Manager is responsible for leading all public relations activities through the coordination, development and implementation of targeted and effective public relations, communications, engagement material and events that facilitate meaningful community involvement in natural resource management and positively position the Mallee CMA within the community.

This is a critical position within the organisation in managing the relationship between the Mallee CMA and its key investors. This position ensures Mallee CMA promotional material and public relations activities are reflective of funding requirements and consistent with departmental guidelines and messaging.

Some of your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing accurate documents and written communications including project publications, digital and print material, that incorporates content appropriate for the purpose and audience;
  • Demonstrating leadership by providing direction on sensitive political issues to subject matter experts who are expected to speak publicly or in the media;
  • Developing and implementing programs which support project teams to respond to emerging threats and opportunities, including extreme climatic conditions;
  • Participating in forums and processes to capture, communicate and share innovative ideas and practices; and
  • Developing and/or reviewing key NRM sub-strategies and action plans as required, in consultation with partner agencies and the community, to deliver protection and enhancement of high priority assets.

About You

To be successful in this position you will ideally hold tertiary qualifications in Public Relations, Journalism and/or a related discipline and have demonstrated previous experience in a similar role. Any experience gained within the natural resource management or rural sectors, and/or a background in local government, will be highly regarded. 

Importantly, Mallee CMA is looking for a driven and resilient individual with a clear understanding of the expectations of the role and a confident, 'can do' attitude. You will have strong communication skills, with the ability to 'read' people from all different walks of life and adjust your communication methods accordingly. You will have the ability to multi-task and prioritise your workload and be comfortable managing internal and external stakeholder expectations regarding delivery timeframes. 

This role will be well suited to a mature and flexible individual who can roll with the punches and has an inner drive and passion to deliver engaging and relevant content to the target audience.
