Reporting to the General Counsel and Sr. Vice President, Regulatory Affairs & HR, Alcanna is seeking a OH&S Manager or Director to be responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive range of employee health and safety programs and services to meet the goals and legal obligations of Alcanna. This includes the development and implementation of OH&S policies and standard operating procedures and the creation and maintenance of all health and safety initiatives; including investigations, compliance audits and working with regulators. The OH&S Manager or Director is responsible for providing up-to-date analysis relating to all regulatory compliance to business leaders, including their impact to current functions. They are committed to building strong working relationships with business partners while providing the support, confidentiality and sensitivity required of all employee interactions. The successful candidate is focused on creating a strong safety culture within the retail environment of the organization through successful collaboration with business partners and then implementation of OH&S initiatives including processes, policies and procedures. Role and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • As the most senior OH&S partner, proactively partner with and influence leadership and management to facilitate the continued journey of transitioning safety from priority to value
  • Foster a continuous improvement mindset to develop planning, implementation and/or administration of OH&S policies and procedures
  • Develop training requirements, maintain records of all health and safety-related training and assist in the development of rollout programs
  • Develop and implement projects for health and safety including preparing regular safety bulletins and OH&S boards for new and existing stores
  • Prepare and manage the occupational health and safety budget
  • Ensure adequate controls exist and are followed in the areas of responsibility
  • Develop, implement and manage operational procedures for the efficient and effective operation of the company’s OH&S functions
  • Lead the implementation of upgrades and enhancements to OH&S systems within areas of assigned responsibility
  • Work with management to investigate incidents thoroughly and effectively, and then respond appropriately as required
  • Assist (working with current Human Resources Business Partner – OH&S) in disability management claims, modified work offers and submitting information into WCB
  • Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as requested including safety statistics, incidents, regulatory inspections, outstanding corrective action reports, etc.
  • Maintain OH&S electronic files on all intranet platforms
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure the up-to-date accuracy of all employee records
  • Manage internal reporting with updated incident information, inspections, etc.
  • Create and maintain Safety Data Sheets (WHMIS) for new and existing stores
  • Other OH&S related tasks as required

Experience and Qualifications (commensurate with seniority of role)

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in OH&S or related field
  • Minimum, 5-years’ OH&S experience is required
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and/or Certified Healthcare Safety Professional designation is preferred
  • Broad knowledge working knowledge of Provincial, Federal and State Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, Workers' Compensation, and recognized Industry Standards
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite applications
  • Experience with large workforce of 2,000+ employees preferred
  • Must be able to pass a basic security clearance
  • Must have reliable transportation (depending on nature of role, company vehicle may be provided)
