Berry Street's Residential Programs provide accommodation, care and support to children and young people who cannot live with their families and who are referred through the child protection system. 

About the role:

  • Residential Care staff work as a collaborative and caring team, and provide a high level of therapeutic care and supervision to children and young people living in our houses.  Children and young people present with complex care needs related to behaviour and health and development.
  • Our staff are role models to the children and young people, and assist with activities of daily living, including ensuring interactions are positive. This includes spending quality time with them in the home, where you support in cooking meals, undertaking household chores and participating in their daily activities as required.
  • There are also observational and administrative requirements, with responsibility for completing reports, updating records and providing information to other professionals regarding the young people in our care.

Essential requirements for the role:

  • A current and valid Victorian Driver’s Licence (minimum green Ps);
  • Evidence of right to work in Australia;
  • Be willing to undertake a National Police Check with Berry Street, and an International Police Check if applicable;
  • A valid Working with Children Employee Card;
  • Be willing to undertake a Psychometric Assessment with Berry Street.

Desirable for the role:

  • Desired applicant qualities for this role include someone with a Young Person-centred approach, who is available to work a variety of times, energetic and excited to make a difference in Children and Young People’s lives
  • An interest in working with families and carers to support and assist in the lives of Children and Young People with a disability, including young people with complex issues and possible trauma affectation
  • Demonstrated skill in supporting Children and Young People with major behaviours of concern with in a positive and therapeutic frame work
  • Experience in disability care and/or trauma management will be highly regarded
  • Qualifications in the following: Residential Care (Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention)

Relevant qualification in Youth Work Community Services or Alcohol & Other Drugs

We also welcome applicants without qualifications as we offer a Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention to successful and eligible candidates.  It is a mandatory requirement that all Residential Care Workers undertake this qualification to continue to employment.

  • Interest in contributing to the wellbeing and development of young people who may have significant behavioural difficulties;
  • Open minded and non-judgemental and engage well with young people and staff
  • Great communication skills;
  • Resilience during a crisis or conflict;
  • Professional manner and presentation to deal with services supporting young people. 

We staff our houses on a 24-hour roster, 7 days a week and you would be required to work shifts that could fall within these hours.  Most shifts are 8 hours in length and day and afternoon shifts span the hours of 7am and 11pm.  All staff are expected to be able to work night shifts and stand up shifts.
