Expression of Interest: Chair of Council Audit Committee

Cessnock City Council (Council) is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the appointment as independent Chair of Council’s Audit Committee for a period of three (3) years commencing February 2017.

Cessnock City Council provides a diverse range of services and facilities for the residents within the local government area, as well as visitors. We employ approximately 280 employees and are situated within the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, approximately 120 kilometres north of Sydney and 40 kilometres west of Newcastle.

The Audit Committee meets at least four (4) times per year on a Tuesday in Cessnock. The Committees objective is to provide independent assurance and assistance to Council on risk management, internal control, governance and external accountability procedures. The Committee ensures there is an adequate and effective system of internal control throughout Council and assists in the operation and implementation of the Internal and External Audit Plans.

Members of the Committee are expected to:

  • understand the relevant legislative and regulatory requirements appropriate to Cessnock City Council;
  • contribute the time needed to study and understand the papers provided;
  • apply good analytical skills, objectivity and good judgment;
  • express opinions frankly, ask questions that go to the fundamental core of issues, and pursue independent lines of enquiry;
  • uphold the values and objectives of the organisation;
  • attend all Committee meetings as scheduled; and
  • treat all matters as confidential.

All Committee members are expected to acknowledge, and comply with, Council’s Code of Conduct.

Remuneration:

$15,000 per annum (ex GST), including travel, for all meetings and an annual presentation to Council.
