Becoming an Apprentice with City of Newcastle (CN) will provide you with combined on-the-job learning with structured training.  You will learn an array of specialist practical skills and knowledge relevant to parks and gardens management.

As a Parks and Gardens Apprentice, your duties will include, but are not limited to, mowing, planting, renovation of playing areas, plant and tree maintenance, pruning, digging, mulching, weeding, fertilising, litter collection, spraying (herbicides/pesticides), irrigation, watering duties and operation of equipment.

To be successful in this job you will have:

Essential

  • Completion of Year 10 School Certificate, ROSA ‘Record of School Achievement’ or Year 12 Higher School Certificate, with satisfactory results including as a minimum a pass in General Mathematics and English.
  • Able to satisfy basic manual handling and physical health requirements of the position and a willingness to work in an outdoor environment.
  • Literacy / numeracy skills commensurate with the position.
  • Reasonable communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work under supervision and as part of team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to develop sound knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety.
  • A commitment to the prescribed training requirements and personal development.
  • WHS Construction Induction Card (White Card) or ability and willingness to obtain prior to commencement
  • Current NSW Class C Licence (manual) or Provisional Drivers Licence (manual) or ability and willingness to obtain prior to commencement.
  • Access to reliable transport for attendance at both work and external training providers.
  • A genuine interest and passion in undertaking a trade with a demonstrated interest in Horticultural (Parks and Gardens) work.

Desirable

  • Completion of a pre-apprenticeship course or work experience relevant to the position.
  • Experience and exposure in the use of garden hand tools and small plant and equipment.
  • Experience as part of a functioning team.
  • Basic computer literacy, including experience / knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Remuneration: $32,459 + 9.5% Superannuation per annum for a 38-hour week.
