  • 3-year Fixed Term Apprenticeship (or earlier, dependent on competency-based completion)
  • Completion Qualification: Certificate III Civil Construction (General)
  • Recruitment for all positions will include interviews, ability testing and a health assessment

Becoming an Apprentice with City of Newcastle (CN) will provide you with the opportunity to combine on-the-job learning with structured training.  You will be given the opportunity to learn an array of specialist practical skills and knowledge relevant to civil engineering construction.

Apprentices work in conjunction with Field Supervisors and Coordinators, focusing on (but not limited to) projects covering areas such as road maintenance and construction, public spaces, drainage, pipelines and recreation works. Apprentices can be rotated to other areas within Civil Construction & Maintenance as required by the business.

To be successful in this job you will have:

Essential

  • Completion of Year 10 School Certificate or ROSA ‘Record of School Achievement’ at a minimum with satisfactory results including at a minimum a pass in General Mathematics and English.
  • A genuine interest and passion in civil the construction industry.
  • Ability to satisfy basic manual handling and physical health requirements of the position and a willingness to work in an indoor and outdoor environment.
  • Literacy / numeracy skills commensurate with the position.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work under supervision and as part of team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to develop sound knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety.
  • A commitment to the prescribed training requirements and personal development.
  • WHS Construction Induction Card (White Card) or ability and willingness to obtain prior commencement.
  • Current NSW Class C Drivers Licence or ability and willingness to obtain prior to commencement.
  • Access to reliable transport for attendance at both work and external training providers.

Desirable 

  • Completion of a pre-apprenticeship course or work experience relevant to the position.
  • Experience and exposure in the use of hand / power tools, plant or machinery.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Basic computer literacy, including experience / knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Remuneration: $32,456 + 9.5% Superannuation per annum for a first year Apprentice, working a 38-hour week.
