City of Newcastle (CN) has an opportunity for a diligent person who has recently completed a Degree in Urban Planning, to join our Planning and Regulatory team as a Graduate Planning Officer.

As a Graduate you will be contracted to CN for 4 years, you will work a 35 hour week and as part of the position rotate through various sections of our Regulatory Planning & Assessment to gain exposure to and an understanding of different aspects of the Urban Planner role.

You will be supported by a network of people including your Coordinator, Learning and Development Advisor, your workplace mentor and your cohort of fellow undergraduates and graduates across CN.

To be successful in this job you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Urban Planning, Urban Design or Land Economics.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work as part of a team.
  • Sound written and oral communication skills, including the production of clear concise reports, to contribute at meetings and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Research and analytical skills relating to urban policy and planning.
  • Willingness to attend, organise and participate in community engagement processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to a variety of people.
  • Ability to set priorities, organise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work outside regular office hours and a Class C Driver’s Licence.

Desirable

  1. An understanding of local environmental plans and development control plans, development policy procedures and guidelines.
  2. An understanding of the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and the NSW planning system.
