The Eastern Melbourne PHN (EMPHN) is a new organisation established to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of Health services for patients, particularly those at risk of poor health outcomes, and to improve coordination of care to ensure patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time.

The Intake and Brief Intervention Clinician is an integral role in the effective and timely care of people in the community with a range of mental health issues.  This role will serve as the initial point of contact for all clients referred to the EMPHN’s mental health services undertaking needs, mental state and risk assessments at the point of intake.  Using strong assessment skills the Intake and Brief Intervention Clinician will inform the subsequent allocation to the most clinically appropriate EMPHN service or facilitate a referral to another external service under the ‘No Wrong Door’ philosophy. 

The Intake and Brief Intervention Clinician will also provide brief intervention to clients referred to the Suicide Prevention Service (SPS) under the Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS). ATAPS SPS is part of the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care Program, and its purpose is to deliver short term, goal orientated focussed psychological strategies to individuals with common mental disorders of mild to moderate severity presenting with suicidality.  This role will also provide Brief Intervention to clients who due to service demand are placed on a waiting list or are assessed as in need of minimal mental health support.

This role is expected to work collaboratively with the Intake and Brief Intervention Manager, other EMPHN staff and mental health services to meet the client’s needs and provide the best possible outcome through effective engagement, assessment and psychological interventions.

 

Key Selection Criteria

  • Must hold current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration as a psychologist; nurse with AHPRA, Nursing & Midwifery board of Australia, and be credentialed as mental health nurse with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses; or as an accredited  mental health social worker registered with AHPRA and the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
  • The ability to deliver evidence based focused psychological strategies to a diverse client group with varying mental health presentations
  • The ability to successfully engage with and assess people from diverse backgrounds, including those from high-risk groups, in particular those presenting with challenging and complex mental health disorders including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, homeless or same sex attracted communities.
  • Have a minimum of three years community mental health experience, or other relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently combined with flexibility in working within teams and adaptability to a changing environment.
  • Competency in risk assessments, crisis intervention and an understanding of the complex systems of private and public mental health systems.
