Expression of Interest for future Job Opportunities with Flourish Australia

About the Organisation

RichmondPRA is now Flourish Australia. Our new name reflects our fundamental and enduring commitment to people’s mental health and wellbeing, supporting them to thrive and live a contributing life.

Flourish Australia is one of the larger providers of recovery-oriented mental health services in Australia. We offer a range of services to meet the different needs of those with a lived experience of a mental health issue in the community. This ranges from places that provide individual and group support and activities, to dedicated programs for specific areas of need

With 60+ locations across New South Wales and Southern Queensland, we support over 4000 people with their recovery. People are at the centre of everything we do at Flourish Australia – they’re our heart and soul. We reflect this through the language we use, our pride and belief in our team and our respect and understanding of those with a lived experience of a mental health issue

A day in the life of Mental Health and Peer Work in Flourish Australia's community outreach programs

As a Mental Health Worker or Peer Worker in one of our community outreach programs your typical day would be varied and interesting. You would work with a high degree of independence, but with the support and guidance of your supervisor and colleagues when needed.

You start the day at one of our offices where you would check your daily tasks on our computer database. You would then attend a morning meeting with the rest of your team. At this meeting the priorities and issues of the day would be discussed before you would head out in one of our fleet vehicles to visit the people to whom we provide support.

The nature of the support provided to people you visit would vary greatly depending on the individual needs of each person. Typical tasks involve helping people look after their home environment and supporting people with community activities like shopping, attending medical appointments or going to the gym. You might also support people to participate in recreational activities, look for work or gain a qualification. The emphasis in mental health work is always on supporting independence and skill development. Your role would be one of walking alongside and assisting people with their daily activities, whilst providing support in achieving their personal goals.

As a Mental Health Worker or Peer Worker you would work within a recovery framework where the person receiving support would be central in determining the assistance they receive. You would support that person to make choices based on their personal desires and wish to change and learn. On a daily basis you would work in partnership with family members and carers, clinical mental health services and other support agencies. This might involve organising support meetings, liaising with people over the phone and corresponding via email.

The role of the Mental Health Worker or Peer Worker can be both fun and challenging. It is multi-faceted, drawing on the principles of mental health recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation to provide person led support for people in their personal journey to wellbeing.

Our positions

The difference between a Mental Health Worker and a Peer Worker at Flourish Australia is that a Peer Worker is required to use their lived experience of a mental health issue and personal recovery openly, appropriately and effectively to build professional relationships with the people they support that also experience a mental health issue.

It is not a requirement for Mental Health Workers to use their lived experience of a mental health issue in their everyday work.

For more information about what it means to be a Peer Worker with Flourish Australia, please review the current Position Description and the Peer Worker information statement “What You Should Consider Before Becoming A Peer Worker”.

For more information on the Mental Health Worker role, please read the Position Description

Flourish Australia positions are open to all suitably qualified applicants. We have a strong commitment to participation of people with a lived experience of a mental health issue in our workforce.

Flourish Australia also values diversity in the workplace and encourages applications from suitably qualified people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island backgrounds and people from CALD, LGBTI communities and mature age candidates.
