Research Assistant - Cancer Research Division

Job No: GC330
Location: Darlinghurst

At Garvan our research is focused upon understanding the role of genes and molecular and cellular processes in health and disease as the basis for developing future preventions, treatments and cures. Our scientists are researchers who work towards making significant breakthroughs in scientific discovery to positively impact human health.

We are seeking a full-time dedicated research assistant to work in the Cancer Division Matrix & Metastasis Group headed by Dr. Thomas Cox.  The group combines the use of 3D models of cancer with novel state-of-the-art imaging approaches to reveal how the extracellular matrix drives cancer progression and metastasis. Our mission is to establish targeting of the extracellular matrix as a viable therapeutic approach in the treatment of solid cancers.

The project involves the use of a range of cellular and molecular biology techniques along with 2D and 3D in vitro and in vivo culture of tumour cells, fluorescence microscopy, PCR, gene cloning and siRNA and gene over expression studies. Advanced training in cutting-edge 3D models of cancer as well as in vitro and in vivo imaging and molecular techniques will be provided within the laboratory.

Successful candidates must have a B.Sc. Honours (First Class) degree or equivalent in an area of the Biological Sciences covering cell biology, biochemistry and/or molecular biology, immunology or related biosciences.

We place an emphasis on good team spirit, cooperation, flexibility, excellent time management with a strong drive and a commitment to produce high quality experimental outcomes.

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and includes 14% superannuation and flexible salary packaging options.
