The Garvan Institute is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutions with approximately 500 scientists, students and support staff working in research programs in Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity, Immunology & Inflammation, Osteoporosis, and Neuroscience.
The Development Group within the Garvan’s Cancer Research Program (www.garvan.org.au) is currently is currently building and using models of altered mammary and prostate development in association with genome-wide screening techniques, to investigate carcinogenic process within these tissues. We are using these models to investigate the molecular basis of anti-estrogen and chemotherapeutic resistance in cancer with a view to discovering potential drug targets for personalised therapy.
To support these projects, we are seeking a talented and enthusiastic person for the position of Research Assistant within the Development Group.
Applicants should have a background in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, bioinformatics or related disciplines, be an Australian citizen or hold a visa allowing them to work in Australia, and have recently completed (or are currently completing), a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours. The position will be offered for a one-year full-time fixed term initially and Research Assistant applicants with a view to undertaking PhD within the next one to two years are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will likely possess the following key skills and attributes:
- High level of undergraduate performance, BSc (Hons I) MBBS, BMed or BVSc
- Strong skills in an aspect of the biological sciences
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
- The ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team
- The ability to proactively and efficiently execute the administrative functions necessary to support the team effort
- A strong drive and commitment to produce high quality experimental outcomes.
