Context and the Role

The George Institute for Global Health, India in partnership with Imperial College London is hosting the Global Health Research Centre (GHRC) for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Environmental Change. This centre is funded by National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), UK. The overall aim of the proposed NIHR GHRC is to become a recognized centre of excellence on NCDs and global environmental change in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), co-producing and implementing world-leading research with local communities, strengthening research capability, advocacy, and policy for health equity, within a period of 5 years. During the five-year period, the centre will work in three countries namely India, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

One of the initiatives under the NIHR-GHRC for NCDs and Environmental Change is developing a sustainable food systems intervention integrated with primary health care focusing on, but not limited to, public food procurement programs. The goal is to enhance dietary diversity, food and nutrition security, and reduce NCD risk with co-benefit of better environmental outcomes.

The formative phase of this study involves co-development of the intervention in consultation with the stakeholders and community. In the selected block of district Sarguja, Chhattisgarh, villages will be purposively selected. Qualitative enquiries will be conducted with key stakeholders, beneficiaries of the public food procurement programs (PFPPs) and health system functionaries. Community surveys with PFPP beneficiaries will further inform the intervention. Proposed modifications in PFPP will be assessed for acceptability among stakeholders and community members and the feasibility of integrating them into existing policies and programs will be explored during stakeholder workshops and discussions. The situational analysis will be followed by the actual development of the multisectoral intervention.

An experienced field supervisor will assist the research officer and project manager in the day-to-day running of the tasks on the field. The position will be in Chhattisgarh and will involve the running of the project as per the protocol in the field.
