Pro-Rata Salary Range of $121,134 to $134, 828 Base (dependent on experience, skills and capabilities) plus 11.5% Superannuation + Smart Salary Packaging Benefit.
 
We are seeking an expert Legal Counsel to join our dynamic team of five lawyers providing legal support to The George Institute as well as some commercial enterprises.

 

The Opportunity: 

This role will involve providing legal advice, drafting and negotiating contracts, managing legal risk and supporting our organisation in various legal matters related to medical research, clinical trials, intellectual property, privacy and regulatory compliance.

 

 Key Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Provide high quality advice on legal and regulatory issues of importance to the organisation.
  • Draft, review, and assist with the negotiation of contracts and other legal documents for the organisation.
  • Identify, assess, and manage legal risks associated with the organisation’s activities, projects, and collaborations. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and best practices to minimise legal exposure and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist with the further development and implementation of the Institute’s data governance and privacy frameworks.
  • Assist with the further development and implementation of relevant organisational policies and procedures.
  • Support the SLC with ad hoc projects and “business as usual” activities.
  • Update, coordinate, and prepare legal templates for use across The George Institute Group.
  • Manage (with other members of the team) the legal team’s matter management system(s), registers and related records.
  • Provide training on relevant legal topics and maintain excellent relationships with all business units of the organisation.
  • Participate in team meetings and activities.
  • As we are a global organization, engage with colleagues and stakeholders in other regions relative to the responsibilities of the role, accommodating global time zones where required, to ensure seamless communication and collaboration. 

 

Our Successful Candidate will possess:

  • Tertiary qualification(s) in law and admitted to practise as a solicitor in NSW, holding a current  practising certificate (unsupervised) with the Law Society of NSW.
  • Between 4 to 6 years’ relevant post admission experience gained from a combination of private practice and in-house roles, and demonstrated experience in general commercial law, privacy, IP, and employment law.
  • Substantial experience in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, and general corporate matters.
  • Skilled in matters relating to governance and risk management.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail, seeing the big picture, and a strong focus on quality.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous external global environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work autonomously, in small teams, and with a wide range of varying stakeholders with a demonstrated ability to act with integrity in all matters.
  • Experience working with or within a medical research institute, university and / or the Not-for-Profit sector will be highly regarded.  
  • Flexible to work non-standard hours of work for collaboration and contact with global teams based on requirements of the position.
