ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE

Under the direction of the Director of Operations Finance, this role is responsible for overseeing Property Accountants and the monthly full accounting cycle for retirement residences including reconciliations, payroll, compliance, entity financial and management reports, tax and other government compliance, forecasting, budgeting and continuous improvement of the company's financial reporting systems and processes. The role is also responsible for the accounting of the corporate entities and working directly with the General Managers at the residences.

 

BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

Must hold a university degree in accounting a CPA, CA designation with “Big Four” experience. Must be a detail-oriented individual and a team player with at least four to five years of progressive accounting experience. Must have a positive “can do” attitude with a proven track record for meeting/exceeding deadlines, implementing process improvements and produce accurate work. Excellent working knowledge of Excel and computerized accounting systems.  Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and orally, in the English language. Must be self motivated, possess strong organizational and analytical skills, collaborative with all areas of the business and have the desire to learn.  Understanding of the Retirement Residences Regulations and experience with retirement living is an asset. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and maintains timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
  • Develops, implements, and ensures compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Documents and maintains complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.
  • Develops and maintains financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control, and petty cash.
  • Manages the bookkeeping function, including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll. Analyzes all accounts to ensure that balance is reasonable and correct.
  • Reviews monthly results and implements monthly variance reporting as compared to budget & forecast. Ensures that all statutory requirements of the organization are met including, Withholding Payments (CPP, EI), Income Tax, Goods and Services Tax.
  • Manages the cash flow and prepares cash flow forecasts in accordance with policy. Prepares all supporting information for the annual audit with the approved external auditor.
  • Prepares all supporting information for authorized groups such as the Ministry of Health, Canadian Revenue Agency and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
  • Enforces adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.
  • Assists General Managers and Regional Managers prepare the annual budget and forecasts in consultation with the Director of Operations Finance.
  • Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Achieves budget and forecast objectives by working with General Managers including scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data in a timely manner and with particular accuracy.
  • Acts as the liaison between the designated residences/homes and their clients, owners, and /or managers, by responding to all enquiries, and reporting any concerns to the Director of Operations Finance.
  • Prepares special reports for Owners by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to financial staff by coaching, counseling, training and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraisals.
  • Attends regulatory organizations’ meetings and bring forward any issues that have financial impact on the residences/homes to the Director of Operations Finance and Regional Manager.
  • Works independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Performs other related tasks as delegated by the Director of Operations Finance.
  • Some travel in Canada required.
  • Complies with all corporate policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required mandatory training/education.
