About the Opportunity

As a member of Team Zissou, you'll be living with our team of experts aboard our research vessel, The Belafonte. We have a great team of dedicated and highly skilled researchers, sailors, engineers, and interns. 

We conduct research in a variety of areas of Marine Biology around the world, with a mandate to explore, gather information, and educate the public about our findings. 

Currently, we are planning on undergoing a major voyage to locate a rare and elusive Jaguar Shark. It is best described as being a  highly abnormal sharklike fish, ten meters in length with unfamiliar dorsal features and covered in spots. We would like you to join our team to help find and document this rare creature.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead marine field expeditions, as required, for baseline surveys and monitoring.
  • Prepare baseline and monitoring reports covering marine fish and fish habitat, including data analysis and interpretation.
  • Prepare permit applications, including Fisheries Act, Disposal at Sea, Navigation Protection Act and port authority.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated technical competency and knowledge of marine ecology, fisheries, or related discipline.
  • Ability and interest to undertake and lead field programs, potentially in remote locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a high standard of scientific rigour to all projects and deliverables.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated reporting and project management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and adaptability. 
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written -- technical or scientific writing).

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a graduate degree in a relevant environmental discipline (marine biology/ecology, environmental science).
  • Minimum of eight years’ marine science experience.
  • Working knowledge of UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and environmental impact assessment methods.
  • Commercial diving experience would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in front of or behind a camera in a documentary setting is an asset.
  • Design and lead marine field programs, as required, for baseline surveys and monitoring.
