About the Organisation

Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation (Anyinginyi) is a multi-disciplinary organisation which provides primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region.

Anyinginyi consists of five different sections covering a wide array of services such as clinical care and social and emotional well being, health promotions, sports and active lifestyle and administrative services. This diversity allows for a holistic approach to health, ensuring that clients physical and emotional health and well-being is given the utmost priority.

Anyinginyi health service delivery area stretches north of Tennant Creek to Elliott, across to the east, almost to the QLD border and south to Ali Curung - almost 150,000 square km.

About the Opportunity 

Anyinginyi has several exciting opportunities for full-time Registered Nurses to join the Health Services team in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory.

Reporting to the Practice Nurse Manager and Health Services Section Manager, you will be responsible for providing culturally sensitive nursing care for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of the Barkly region.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Working closely with Aboriginal Health Practitioners to maintain and develop culturally appropriate and accessible health services;
  • Involving traditional elders and leaders in promoting health and wellbeing within the community;
  • Providing general health care - assessment and management of a broad range of clinical problems in consultation with Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Doctors, other nurses or CARPA Standard Treatment Manual written protocols;
  • Participating in dealing with issues affecting the social and emotional wellbeing of the community; and
  • Delivering and/or referring counselling supports to individuals and families on health and wellbeing related issues.

This role will see you beginning as a generalist Nursing Practitioner with the expectation that you will become a health specialist in child/maternal health, renal health or another area as defined by operational needs and preferences.

Whilst the majority of service delivery will occur in Tennant Creek, occasional overnight travel to remote communities may be required, dependent on operational needs.

About You

To be successful in this role, you must be a Registered Nurse and have current AHPRA Registration.

Working with Aboriginal individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds, it is essential that you are culturally sensitive and have a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, with the ability to effectively communicate and support the delivery of culturally responsive programs and services with an understanding of the importance of traditional cultures, values and protocols. Previous experience delivering primary health care services within an Aboriginal community will be highly regarded but is not mandatory.

You will also have demonstrated experience in providing clinical care in the areas of wound management, immunisations, comprehensive health assessments and chronic disease management, alongside the ability to undertake triage of clients, especially those presenting with acute/emergency health problems.

Finally, you must possess high-level communication, negotiation and consultation skills. You'll also possess the ability to be innovative in response to the changing health needs of Aboriginal clients, with a willingness to incorporate local values in wellbeing programs, services and initiatives.

Please note: Prior to commencement you will need to undergo a National Police Clearance and obtain a current Ochre Card. You must have (or be willing to obtain) a current certification to give vaccines in the Northern Territory. A Driver's License and the ability to drive to communities as required is also essential for this role.

Please note this is a 1-2 year contract, renewable upon further funding.
