About the Organisation

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to using its specialist knowledge and skills to prevent domestic and family violence in the community and to empower those affected by it. 

Established in 1987, CRDVS has grown from a small team of volunteers to become one of the first four Regional Domestic Violence Services to receive funding from the Queensland government in 1992. Lead by a Board and with 25 staff, the organisation provides a free, confidential and highly professional service for family members who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, domestic and family violence.

The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals with experience in adult and child counselling, court support and training. Their vision is clear, and at the heart of everything they do:

About the Opportunity

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) now has a rewarding opportunity for an experienced Community Education/Intake Worker to join their team in Cairns. This is a part-time role, working approximately 30 hours per week as part of a 12 month maternity leave contract.

You will be delivering quality education and training services to the community including schools, businesses, or professionals working with individuals who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence.

A key element of this role will be providing confidential and appropriate telephone and front counter information, intake and risk assessment, referrals and crisis counselling for clients as required ensuring victims in crisis receive a timely service. 

More specifically, your duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Working with the CRDVS team to enhance greater community awareness of domestic violence by developing, coordinating and facilitating community education programmes;
  • Developing, planning and facilitating the implementation of appropriate training programmes;
  • Providing crisis assistance, risk assessment and safety planning, information and referral to victims of domestic violence, working under general supervision and within the guidelines of relevant legislation;
  • Liaising with government and non-government organisations regarding education and training related matters in order to develop professional networks;
  • Researching, developing and maintaining professional and client resources for education and training purposes as well as for use in the organisation; and
  • Developing, editing and publishing a bi-yearly information/education/training newsletter and maintaining the service's social media site.

About You

To be successful in this role, you must have completed an undergraduate degree in a Psychology, Social Work, Community Welfare, or Education related field, or have relevant experience and be working towards a qualification.

You will also have experience in preparing and delivering educational/training materials and the ability to implement, effective and inclusive learning processes for the individual needs of learners and groups of learners. 

In addition to providing information and training, it is essential that you have the ability to handle crisis calls. As such, you will need to have exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills, resilience, and strong analytical skills.

Successful applicants will also need to have a demonstrated understanding of the effects and causes of domestic violence, including knowledge of cultural differences and needs. 

CRDVS is looking for an experienced individual, preferably with experience in the Domestic and Family Violence or Sexual Assault sector, with a high level of written and computer literacy skills (including Microsoft Office) who can work cooperatively within a team environment. 

Please note: Candidates are required to hold a current driver's licence, and have or be willing/able to obtain a working with children card and criminal history check.

The Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc (CRDVS) began its life back in 1987 when it grew from a local, grass roots group called the Domestic Violence Action Group (DVAG). This group was made up of passionate people who volunteered their time to look at the issue of domestic violence in the Cairns area. The DVAG was made up of volunteers from Ruth's Women's Shelter, the Women's Information and Referral Centre, local lawyers, Lifeline and the Cairns Base Hospital Social Worker.

In response to the Queensland Domestic Violence Task Force report Beyond These Walls, published in 1988, the DVAG sought to establish a service model to provide interventions for people affected by domestic and family violence and funding was applied for under the Domestic Violence Initiative Programme. In 1992 the Regional Domestic Violence Service Cairns (as it was then known) became one of the first four Regional Domestic Violence Services to receive funding from the Queensland government.
