About Parnngurr

Established in 1989, Parnngurr Community School is situated approximately 370km from Newman, WA in the home of the Martu people. The school works closely with Martu Elders to deliver a two-way learning approach that incorporates traditional values in a culturally sensitive manner to benefit the wider community.

The Parnngurr school community is tight-knit, relaxed and inclusive. Supporting approximately 30 local students from Grades 1 to 12, the school is committed to providing diverse pathways, and creating and fostering further opportunities for their students to succeed.

About the Opportunity

Due to a recent influx of students in the Early Childhood years, Parnngurr Community School is now looking for an energetic Early Childhood/Kindergarten Teacher to join their team in 2021.

Working alongside a dedicated team of teachers and Martu Teaching Assistants, you will be responsible for the planning and implementation of education programs for students aged 4-8 (Kindergarten to Grade 2).

The typical school day is structured around a combination of literacy and numeracy, as well as practical activities including arts and sports. Regular on-country learning trips are also taken with Elders and translated into core, in-class activities aligned with the Australian Curriculum. You will be provided with strong support to enable you to plan and deliver effective two-way learning programs.

About You

To be eligible for this role you will need to hold a Tertiary teaching qualification and be registered (or eligible for registration) with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA).

Additionally, you should have a recognised qualification, such as a Major, Graduate Diploma or Masters Degree in the Early Childhood, Kindergarten, Childcare or Primary Education space.

You will need to be a team player with strong interpersonal communication skills and a genuine willingness to collaborate with your colleagues as well as the wider community. A strong sense of commitment and resilience will be essential to your success in this role, as will your desire to deliver quality education programs for Parnngurr students.

Importantly, you will need to have an understanding and respect of Indigenous culture as well as an awareness of the challenges that are associated with desert living and Indigenous learning contexts. You must be willing to work with the community and contribute creative ideas toward planning and delivering programs that are inclusive of traditional values.

For your hard work and dedication, you will be rewarded with an attractive remuneration circa $65,758 - $105,048 (dependant on your level of experience) plus super and a range of other benefits, including:

  • An incentive bonus after twelve months;

  • Two single fights between Newman and Perth per year; and

Although remote, the community is welcoming to all newcomers and is home to basic amenities including a weekly mail service, general store, community office and modern health clinic. Doctors and Specialists also visit regularly.

About Parnngurr Community School

Parnngurr is a remote West Australian Indigenous Community located 370kms East of Newman, on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. This is a spacious landscape of red sand, spinifex plains, honey grevillia and desert oaks under an azure sky. It is the home of 140 Martu people whose ancestors have been here since the beginning of the Dreaming. The community is built in the shadow of twin hills with particular significance to Martu, at the southern end of the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) National Park.
