About the Opportunity

CAWLS now has two exciting opportunities for a Senior Lawyer and a Solicitor / Lawyer to join their team in Alice Springs on a full-time basis.

Reporting to the Senior Management team, you will be providing high quality legal advice, representation services, case load management tasks and assisting clients with appropriate referrals to other agencies where necessary. 

Your day to day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing high quality legal advice and representation within CAWLS areas of practice and guidelines;
  • Providing representation services to clients including duty services, dispute resolution, Court/Tribunal advocacy, either by personal appearance or briefing counsel to appear (senior role);
  • Representing clients at the local court, in the Federal Circuit court and other tribunals as necessary and to assist with the provision of duty lawyer services;
  • Assisting clients with appropriate referrals to other services and agencies when necessary;
  • Developing and maintain appropriate networks with relevant organisations;
  • Supervision and mentoring of staff, reporting to the Practice Manager (Senior Lawyer role only)
  • Travel to communities including Tennant Creek and Katherine occasionally.

About You

To be successful in this position you will have completed a Bachelor of Law degree and be eligible for a Practicing Certificate in the Northern Territory.

The successful candidate for the Senior Lawyer position will have a minimum 3 years practicing experience in a relevant speciality such as Family Law and/or Civil Law.

For the Solicitor / Lawyer position, successful applicants are required to have 1-3 years industry experience.

Experience working with Aboriginal and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people is desirable but not essential.

A confident and highly empathetic communicator, you will be comfortable giving talks and running workshops, and be able to support and relate to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Adapting your approach to each individual, you will be capable of explaining complex legal issues in clear, plain language; ensuring it is straightforward and understood by clients.

Driven and genuinely committed to CAWLS vision of a community free from violence and abuse, you will be an adaptable team player who enjoys working in a team environment as well as independently. 

Finally, you will be highly flexible, with sound organisational skills and the ability to successfully manage the challenges of remote service delivery. You'll be able to work both autonomously and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team, and be confident creating and maintaining strong relationships with other service providers or relevant organisations, working together to support your clients and communities.

Please note: You will need a current Australian driver's licence and be willing to obtain national police clearance and a working with children check.
