About the Project
The Operations and Maintenance business in Australia has a number of alliance maintenance contracts including the Pilbara Iron Alliance which is undertaken by Fluor Rail Services (FRS), a Fluor company for the provision of rail maintenance services. The culture established within this alliance is honest, open with timely sharing of information and a successful track record of developing and implementing new ideas in order to generate mutual win - win outcomes.
FRS operating under the Operations and Maintenance business line in Australia is proud to have a long established project in the Pilbara region of W.A. maintaining, upgrading and installing heavy tonnage railway systems for the largest privately owned rail infrastructure in Australia. A mechanical workforce is also employed to maintain vehicles, mobile plant and sophisticated track maintenance and re-rail equipment used on the railway line.
This project has been operating since 1968, recently celebrating 40 years of alliance between the two companies. A remotely located team of approximately 200 are involved in maintaining the 1600+klms of railway track from Karratha to Tom Price and surrounding areas.
About the Opportunity
Fluor Rail Services has an exciting opportunities for a Flashbutt Welding Superintendent to join their team, based in Karratha, WA.
The purpose of this role is to manage the track re-rail, construction and maintenance Flashbutt Welding team, to ensure the work is completed to the quality required by the contract, and is performed safely. You will improve project performance through value creation programs, site improvement plans and performance reviews.
Some of the position's day to day responsibilities will include:
- Supervising, co-ordinating, training and directing all the activities of the Flashbutt Welding Section and Welding Personnel which incorporates operating the Viacar machine;
- Applying knowledge of welding and cutting techniques, materials and equipment and fabrication requirements for the rail track;
- Ensuring that craft staff are operating the welder correctly and in adherence with safety requirements;
- Developing and implementing training presentation with relation to Flashbutt welding;
- Ensuring work is carried out in an efficient manner by coordinating daily work schedules with the customer's operations, including personnel deployment, materials coordination and information availability;
- Improving service results by managing, developing and implementing work process improvements in assigned area of responsibility;
- Identifying training requirements, assisting in preparation of training, and implementation of training programs;
- Developing, monitoring and maintaining site operational systems;
- Maintaining a safe work environment by administering a proactive health, safety and environment program orientated towards maintenance activities and zero incidents; and
- Reporting on progress and current issues to Area Manager and client representatives as required.
To be successful in this role you will be proficient in the operation and knowledge of using the Flashbutt welder (preferably with Viacar Flashbutt welding experience), and a minimum of 5 years experience in rail, or a similar heavy industry. You will have demonstrated Field Coordinator or Team Leader experience, and a background in the supervision, management and training of welding teams.
You will need to be able to guide and teach Flashbutt welding practices for continuous improvement, and supervise common welding processes, fabrication and general construction work. The successful applicant will also have satisfactory computer skills, and be proficient in relevant software applications. Importantly, you will demonstrate strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

You will be a clear communicator, with the ability to build effective working relationships, and to inspire and guide individuals toward higher levels of performance.
Due to the remoteness of the location, the role is fly in and fly out of Perth or Brisbane.
