About the Organisation

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to using its specialist knowledge and skills to prevent domestic and family violence in the community and to empower those affected by it. 

Established in 1987, CRDVS has grown from a small team of volunteers to become one of the first four Regional Domestic Violence Services to receive funding from the Queensland government in 1992. Led by a Board and with 25 staff, the organisation provides a free, confidential and highly professional service for family members who are currently or who have experienced, domestic and family violence.

CRDVS is a child safe organisation and all children who come into contact with their services will be provided with a welcoming and safe service.

The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals with experience in adult and child counselling, court support and training. Their vision is clear, and at the heart of everything they do:

About the Opportunity

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) currently has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time Senior Practitioner to join their team in Cairns, QLD working 76 hours per fortnight.

As an experienced practitioner, your primary responsibility of the role is to provide day to day supervision and support to direct client service workers ("the counselling team") based in Mossman & also maintain client programmes and occasionally execute direct service delivery. 

Your day to day duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  • providing effective crisis intervention, counselling and court support services to victims of domestic & family violence through supervision of the Mossman team;
  • participating in community education programs as required by the CEO or board;
  • actively participating in supervision (internally and externally) and professional development training;
  • maintaining current knowledge, trends & practices regarding domestic & family violence to ensure appropriate service delivery; and
  • participating in the review, evaluation and policy development of the organisation in conjunction with other staff.

About You

To be considered for this position you must have a degree level tertiary qualifications in the social or behavioural sciences (e.g. Psychology, Social Work, Community Welfare) or a related discipline and at least 2 years experience working in the specialist domestic and family violence field. 

You will have an in-depth understanding of effects and causes of domestic & family violence, including knowledge of cultural differences and needs. An understanding of the impacts of domestic & family violence on women, children & adolescents is also required.

To be successful in this position you will also need to be able to demonstrate sound knowledge of legislation impacting on situations of domestic and family violence.

You will be an enthusiastic and heavily engaged individual with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to enable you to work cooperatively within a team and to liaise with government and non-government agencies to advocate on behalf of clients. Also required are computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
