The vision of the North Queensland Land Council (NQLC) is for a region in which the native title rights of every native title holder is legally recognised and in which Aboriginal people benefit economically, socially and culturally from the secure possession of their traditional land and waters.

About the Opportunity
North Queensland Land Council (NQLC) currently has exciting opportunities for both Senior and Junior Anthropologists to join its Townsville office and work on Central Queensland Native Title claims. There is one full time junior role and two full time senior roles available.
Key responsibilities of these roles will include:
- Together with the Claim Team Lawyer compiling Terms of Reference for Consultants to undertake research into native title matters for your allocated claim groups;
- Conducting genealogical research, involving fieldwork, desktop and possibly archival research;
- Liaising with the Community and Personal Histories Unit in regard to State archival research that is requested from their department;
- Liaising with the Operations Manager and Project Officers regarding upcoming claimant group meetings, the gathering of signatures for Community and Personal Histories Unit forms, logistics for fieldtrips and any other matters requiring logistical support;
- Conducting or attending claimant group meetings - working group, community group and Authorisation meetings - in relation to Anthropological matters and when requested by the Claim Team Lawyers;
- Attending meetings (at times in Brisbane) with State negotiators of the Department of Natural Resources and Water and Crown Law to discuss matters relating to connection and genealogical materials; and
- Liaising with and taking instructions from the Director of Legal Services, Research and Policy and the Co-ordinating Senior Anthropologist regarding your work on your allocated claims.
- Reviewing and analysis of external consultants reports in order to assess whether reports meet necessary guidelines
- Liaison with external consultants
The ideal junior candidate will hold tertiary qualifications in Australian Anthropology and the senior candidate will ideally have progress towards or achieved post graduate qualifications. NQLC is happy to receive applications from experienced Anthropologists and recent graduates, though applicants with experience working in an anthropological commercial environment will have an advantage.
You will have experience working with Aboriginal groups and skills in effectively and sensitively communicating with Aboriginal people. You will need to demonstrate cultural awareness of relevant Indigenous groups/bodies and knowledge of Native Title legislation and requirements.
These positions will suit applicants with excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as attention to detail and sound reporting skills.
Excellent computer literacy, the ability to multi-task to meet deadlines and a positive attitude to both internal and external client service will also be essential to succeed in this role. All applicants require a current manual driver's licence.
