About Lutheran Care and the Financial Services Hub

Lutheran Care (LC) provides community services on behalf of the Lutheran Church in South Australia and Northern Territory through a range of programs. They support communities through responding to the needs of individuals and families, community development, learning opportunities, accommodation and support. Current programs include emergency relief, financial counselling, family support and education, foster care, housing and multicultural services.

In Central Australia, LC operates a Financial Services Hub which provides a financial literacy program, emergency relief and financial counselling in Alice Springs, nearby town camps and remote communities within the Central Australian service area. The Financial Capability and Wellbeing Program assists vulnerable individuals and families to resolve or alleviate their financial difficulties, improve their ongoing financial capability and manage their future financial affairs, contributing to improved financial wellbeing.

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a full-time Financial Capability Worker to join LC's Financial Capability and Wellbeing team in Alice Springs, NT.

Reporting to the Team Leader – Financial Capability & Wellbeing Officer, you will help people to make informed choices about their financial position, build longer-term capabilities to budget and manage their money and provide emergency relief to clients in need.

You will work predominantly from the Alice Springs office, with the opportunity to travel periodically to surrounding remote communities.

Core duties:

  • Provide one on one budget support to individuals to coach clients in financial literacy. Determine the client's financial situation and assess their needs.
  • Work with eligible others to present non-accredited community education workshops on financial literacy to resource and equip participants with money management skills.
  • Encourage clients to stay motivated and monitor their progress.
  • Assist families at risk of homelessness to manage their finances and household expenses to retain their accommodation
  • Monitor and review Case/Action Plans with clients to support and encourage greater self-reliance.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will hold Certificate III (or above) in Community Services or equivalent or be willing to complete a relevant qualification. Microsoft Office suite proficiency will also help you thrive in your new role. 

The successful candidate will have the ability to work autonomously and within a team to reach team objectives. You will be able to communicate and respond to challenging situations with flexibility, empathy and diplomacy, to advocate with a range of stakeholders on behalf of your clients.  

You will have a solid understanding of Central Australian Indigenous culture and a high level of communication skills both written and verbal, contributing to your ability to connect and work within Indigenous communities. 

While experience working within Indigenous Communities and a First Aid Certificate is desirable, it is not essential.
