About the Organisation

The Western Australian Substance Users Association (WASUA) is a government funded, state-wide, peer based organisation. It is staffed and managed by people who have personal experience with illicit drug use and people interested in illicit drug use issues who support WASUA's practice and principles.

WASUA aims to improve the health and social circumstances of people who use illicit substances in WA. Programs and services work within a social health and community development framework underpinned by Harm Reduction and Peer Education. WASUA provides a non-judgmental space for people who use illicit substances to access a range of services including the NSEP.

WASUA services include fixed site and mobile one for one needle/syringe exchange, information and peer education on safe drug use, safe sex, Hepatitis C and other blood borne viruses, a health clinic, supported referral to drug treatment, legal, social welfare and health services. WASUA operates an outreach peer education and support service and delivers training and education to services including alcohol and other drug agencies, a range of health and educational facilities.

About the Opportunity

The Western Australian Substance Users Association has a fantastic opportunity for a Coordinator - Needle & Syringe Exchange Program (NSEP) to join their dedicated team, based in Perth, on a part time basis (35 hours/week).

Drawing upon personal experience, the successful candidate will play a vital role in enhancing access to harm reduction services for people who use illicit substances.

More specifically, you will be required to:

  • Deliver a comprehensive and effective NSEP to people who use illicit substances;
  • Act upon opportunities to enhance access to NSEP and develop peer networks;
  • Develop and maintain NSEP rosters for both staff and volunteers;
  • Participate in shifts, distributing needles/syringes and related equipment;
  • Provide referrals to relevant health and drug services, welfare and support other agencies;
  • Present education and information sessions locally and across the state; and
  • Promote NSEP with relevant stakeholders e.g. pharmacies and hospitals.

The successful applicant will hold relevant tertiary qualifications, or relevant experience in the field, and a sound understanding of the principles of harm reduction in relation to injecting drug use issues and blood born viruses.

Importantly, you will either have personal experience in illicit drug use or an interest in illicit drug use issues. You'll have a non-judgmental attitude, and a commitment to helping individuals find ways of dealing with their addiction. As you will become involved in progressing and promoting NSEP, experience in program evaluation and development will also be vital to your success in this role.

In addition, you will have excellent communication skills with the proven ability to deliver education and information sessions to a wide range of audiences, and the capacity to establish networks and liaise with various stakeholders, including consumers, government officers, pharmacies and relevant agencies.

Computer literacy, the flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, and a current C class driver's licence is required.
