CAWLS is a community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated integrated team. We are committed to providing excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, non-legal wrap-around support, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family Violence.

CAWLS operates two Commonwealth funded Specialist Domestic Violence Units/Health Justice Partnerships based in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. CAWLS provides ongoing education and training for health service providers to identify and respond to disclosures of family violence through these units.

Because of an exciting period of growth for our organisation, CAWLS is now seeking a self-motivated Senior Solicitor to join our small but busy and tight-knit team in Alice Springs, NT. We are looking for a passionate solicitor to improve access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly by breaking down the barriers between health and legal services.

About the opportunity

Under the direction of the Managing Principal Solicitor, you will provide legal advice, casework, outreach clinics, information and referral, community engagement, community legal education and law reform.

You will have the opportunity to be a leader within our organisation, assist other solicitors, and have a carriage of your matters.

Core duties:

  • Client & file management of complex matters
  • Draft court documents & correspondence
  • Attend Court and appear in the Local Court, FDR & other tribunals
  • Brief and instruct Counsel
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff
  • Work closely with the Practice Manager
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records

About the Benefits

You will receive a competitive salary of circa $95,000 - $106,923, and benefit from 12% super, six weeks annual leave, and an additional 12 days personal leave. Relocation assistance is also available if you are moving from interstate.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need demonstrated post-admission experience. Experience in domestic violence, family law, or civil law will help you hit the ground running. You will also need the ability to work autonomously, managing your caseload and deadlines effectively. 

You will be passionate about civil law and producing excellent outcomes for the women who come to us for help. Experience working with disadvantaged or disenfranchised groups will be advantageous for this role.
