Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at 31 sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. If you are an experienced conservation professional who is passionate about native animal species and their habitats, we have your next opportunity as our Land Conservation Operations Manager based out of Broome, WA, on a full-time permanent basis.

What you'll do

As our Land Conservation Operations Manager, you will be tasked with ensuring effective conservation across the region. The role is also part of our senior management team, meaning you will have the opportunity to contribute to our future direction, policy and strategy. This will be achieved through a number of key duties including (but not limited to):

  • Leadership: Manage a remote team of staff ensuring they have clear plans and objectives, being responsible for visitor management, coordinating and supervising contractors and volunteers and controlling allocation of staff resources to meet operational requirements. 
  • Cultural Competence: Key leadership and partnership role working with a multitude of aboriginal corporations and traditional owners as represented by native titles and the organisations that represent them.
  • Relationship Building: Maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders such as government agencies, indigenous communities and suppliers.
  • Collaboration: Collaborating heavily with the Science and Development (fundraising) teams to ensure the success of our conservation model.
  • Field Work: Travelling to remote locations via 4WD, small plane or helicopter and being away from your home base for small periods at a time.

What we need from you

To succeed in this role you will need a degree in conservation and land management or similar and extensive previous experience in a land conservation role. A large portion of this role relates to fire management and dealing with feral animals, therefore any qualifications or skills in these areas will be highly regarded. Additionally, experience in management-related tasks such as writing and administering budgets is essential.
