Located in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy Railway is Australia’s premier preserved steam railway. Operating on the original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook, this century-old train offers a range of fun-filled experiences for visitors young and old.
Established in 1900, the railway served the local communities that lived in the hills and carried anything from passengers to timber, livestock, potatoes and plants. Today, we have become a tourism icon thanks to the tireless efforts of a small paid team and 300 volunteers.
Our volunteers are at the heart of the work we do and Puffing Billy would not have stood the test of time without our volunteers' dedication and hard work. We now have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to join our team and help us in further growing and diversifying our volunteering pool.
Exciting new opportunity
Working closely with the People and Culture Manager, you will primarily be responsible for providing leadership, advocacy and expertise in practical, contemporary volunteering practices.
Core duties:
- Development and coordination of volunteer programs and procedures
- Stakeholder engagement and collaboration
- Promotion and networking
- Driving volunteer recruitment initiatives
You will also work closely with organisational leaders, including volunteer supervisors, to foster meaningful and memorable experiences that attract and retain volunteers who support our work and adhere to our mission, vision and values.
Please note: As our services operate seven days a week, weekend work would be a requirement of this position.

We are looking for a proactive and solution-driven individual with demonstrated experience in volunteering management and leading and advocating for the volunteering experience. You will inspire a new generation of volunteers to be part of Puffing Billy Railway’s legacy.
Our next superstar will be mature and professional and genuinely enjoy working with others. This role requires you to communicate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including various volunteer demographics. As such, you will have strong interpersonal skills and communicate effectively while being respectful and understanding.
Moreover, you will effectively network with other agencies and actively work with stakeholders to recruit, engage and retain volunteers.
Although not essential, previous experience with volunteer database software such as Better Impact is highly desirable.

Employees are required to sign our Child Safe Policy and Code of Conduct, in addition to undergoing a Rail Safety Medical, participate in a National Criminal History Check and hold an employee status Working with Children Check.
