Australia’s premier preserved steam railway
Located in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy Railway is Australia’s premier preserved steam railway. Operating on the original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook, this century-old train offers a range of fun-filled experiences for visitors young and old.
Established in 1900, the railway served the local communities that lived in the hills and carried anything from passengers to timber, livestock, potatoes and plants. Today, we have become a tourism icon thanks to the tireless efforts of a small paid team and over 300 volunteers.
In November 2021, we opened our state-of-the-art Lakeside Visitor Centre with the vision to enhance our customers' experience within the surrounding Emerald Lake Park precinct. Here, we offer purpose-built indoor and outdoor event and dining spaces. Our Centre also has a historical interpretive zone, giving our guests a glimpse into the early days of steam train travel.
Nestled amongst the towering rainforests, cool fern gullies and native flowers of the Emerald Lake Park precinct, the Lakeside Visitor Centre combines its natural surroundings with the authentic sights, smells, and sounds of Puffing Billy Railway to offer guests a cultural hub with world-class facilities.
All aboard a living time machine
We are now looking for a strategic and driven Commercial Manager to run the day-to-day operations of our state-of-the-art Lakeside Visitor Centre as well as the retail and food and beverages areas of Puffing Billy Railway.
In this role, you will provide the vision and strategic direction to create and sustain a strong and financially successful Commercial division. You will also work closely with the Group Manager Visitor Experience to provide leadership, grow and support a talented Commercial team to help drive success in the retail and food and beverages areas across Puffing Billy Railway.
Core duties:
- Develop and implement the Commercial Portfolio;
- Lead and drive the business and commercial staff to achieve business goals;
- Actively engage with the leadership group and provide input into strategic direction, business planning and financial management;
- Develop and implement a Commercial offering that compliments the core business and its values; and
- Actively participate in continuous improvement.
To ensure ongoing success, you will support existing and develop new Commercial partnerships.
Please note: As our services operate seven days a week, weekend work would be required for this position.
What you will bring to the team
To thrive in this role, you will be a strategic and proactive individual with a strong understanding of and hands-on experience managing and running the operations in a high-volume customer operations environment. Management experience working in the hospitality, events, entertainment or tourism sector looked upon favourably.
Crucial to your success is your ability to lead, mentor and manage our close-knit and enthusiastic team while ensuring commercial business processes and functions are met and well managed.
In this role, you will need to effectively manage budgets, develop menus and assist the Head Chef with produce orders. As such, you will have strong interpersonal skills and be able to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, including food and beverages suppliers.
Although not essential, a qualification in Business Management, Commerce or a related field is highly advantageous.
