What you'll do as an Employment Consultant

As an Employment Consultant, you will assist members of the community to achieve gainful employment by facilitating culturally appropriate employmentWoman sitting at a desk answering a phone. She is smiling. opportunities. You will reduce barriers to participation in the workforce by identifying solutions and working with participants closely. 

Work closely with participants to understand their unique goals and aspirations, and then assist them to access the resources they need to achieve those goals. You might work with clients on a range of different activities such as applying for a Tax File Number or supporting participants into VET or University courses to support employment.

You will also undertake post-placement support with program participants after they have moved into employment, ensuring they have the tools and ongoing support they need to be successful. 

Role specifics:

  • Full-time permanent role
  • Reporting to the Site Manager
  • Based in one of several remote communities in Arnhem Land, NT
  • Office-based

What you need to be successful

While previous experience working in an similar role is advantageous, this opportunity is all about having the right attitude and drive to help. Strong communication and listening skills will be essential for your success in this role. You will also work closely and manage relationships with participants where cultural norms and community development priorities may differ from your own.

You'll be highly organised, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively manage logistics and administration. 

Any experience working in remote areas or with Aboriginal communities will be highly regarded. As will an understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary Aboriginal political, social, cultural and economic issues. 

It will be important to have the confidence and resilience to work in, what can often be an undeniably challenging environment. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, comfortable handling environmental issues such as heat, dust and dirt.
