Puffing Billy Railway – Living History

Located in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges, Puffing Billy Railway is Australia’s premier preserved steam railway. Operating on the original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook, this century-old train offers a range of fun-filled experiences for visitors, young and old.

Established in 1900, the railway served the local communities that lived in the hills and carried anything from passengers to timber, livestock, potatoes and plants. Today, we have become a tourism icon thanks to the tireless efforts of over 300 volunteers and a team of dedicated staff.

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Workshop Supervisor to join our team and be part of living history. In this role, you will run the day-to-day operations of our Belgrave Locomotive Workshop.

This fantastic opportunity would suit an individual who is wanting the ultimate work/life balance. This is primarily a Monday to Friday role, overtime hours are rare, and you won’t spend hours in the city traffic.

Jump on board

You will be responsible for the management of all team members that work in the Belgrave Locomotive Workshop, including assessing worker competencies and managing team member performance.

Core duties:

  • Plan, coordinate and assign work for the team to achieve in an efficient and timely manner
  • Plan all scheduled repair, maintenance and service work carried out in the Belgrave workshop
  • Use the maintenance management system (MEX) to plan, report on progress, etc.
  • Procure parts, consumables and external services within delegation and inspection of goods and services for quality and completeness.

You will also be responsible for planning and overseeing all work activities in the Workshop, including monitoring work quality and progress.

What you will bring to the team

To thrive in this role, you will possess a qualification in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of five years of experience working in this space. You will also have a strong understanding of how to effectively manage and supervise others.

You will be an organised and proactive Supervisor with the ability to effectively lead a team of highly skilled and tenured individuals. You will guide the team to work as one and part of a greater team.

Importantly are your skills to problem solve and multi-task. You will also have the skills to prepare technical reports and other documentation

Moreover, you will have experience and an understanding of how to use maintenance management systems, ideally MEX.
