Bush Heritage Australia is a national non-profit organisation that buys and manages land to protect our irreplaceable landscapes and our magnificent native species so that they can be enjoyed by the current generation and generations to come. With 19 priority landscapes and 42 reserves under our care, we partner with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and agricultural landowners to achieve a healthy country and great conservation outcomes

We are now on the lookout for Aboriginal Partnership Officers to join our Darwin-based team full-time on a 3-year fixed-term contract. These critical positions will see you engaging with local Aboriginal communities and assisting them in implementing their aspirations for a healthy country. This will require individuals with a strong understanding of Aboriginal culture and customs.

About the role

This role will see you engaging with traditional owners to co-design and implement monitoring and evaluation of their Healthy Country and monitoring plans. You will listen to and support Traditional Owners with their aspirations for a healthy country and assist them in facilitating Aboriginal-led work.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Build on-ground monitoring and evaluation capacity within Bush Heritage Aboriginal Partnerships in the Northern Territory;
  • Build and maintain relationships based on mutual respect with Indigenous Rangers, Traditional Owners and management staff;
  • Work closely with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal ranger groups to support Aboriginal-led governance processes; and
  • Ensure Health and Safety procedures and policies are adhered to at all times.

While the role is based in Darwin, it will require regular work on-country, where you may spend up to 2 weeks based with one of our Aboriginal Partnerships.

What you will bring to the position

With tertiary qualifications in field ecology, cross-cultural monitoring and evaluation or social science, you will bring a passion for working with Traditional Owners and conserving the unique natural environment, you will be open-minded in your approach to achieving these goals.

Your strong communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to be as comfortable chatting around a campfire as in a corporate setting and understand that cultural communication is an ongoing, fluid process to which you can effectively contribute.
