Located 11km from the Townsville CBD, we are one of the world's most technologically advanced zinc refineries. We produce Special High-Grade Zinc metal, Zinc Alloy metal and by-products of Sulfuric Acid, Copper, Cadmium, and Zinc Ferrite. Our process involves Roasting, Leaching, Purification, Electrolysis and Casting with sales to domestic and international markets.

Due to our recent major expansion project, including the construction of new, industry-leading technology and equipment, we require additional skilled and dedicated Mechanical Tradespeople to join our team full-time. Our maintenance roster is Monday to Friday with RDOs and early finish Fridays.

The Opportunity:

In this role, you will primarily be responsible for the maintenance, diagnosis, repair and replacement of a wide range of plant and equipment.

You will maximise the ongoing reliability of plant processes through safe and efficient planned, preventive and corrective maintenance practices. Sun Metals will provide on-the-job training for the wide range of maintenance work you undertake. 

Responsibilities include:

• Apply trade knowledge and skills to minimise plant and equipment downtime and optimise plant and equipment by carrying out necessary modifications and minimising maintenance costs
• Interpret technical manuals and drawings as necessary to carry out the required tasks.
• Participate in toolbox talks and pre-start meetings.
• Communicate effectively in a team environment to achieve the goals of the Department, providing feedback to develop maintenance strategies as required.
• Participate in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and 5s implementation, development and maintain standards.

You’ll be great in this role because:

Whether you are fresh out of your apprenticeship or an experienced tradesperson, we are looking for someone passionate about their work, who has strong problem-solving skills, and who can work independently and as part of a team. 

You will have a Trade Certificate in either Boilermaking or Fitting (Cert III Engineering) and previous experience in heavy industry. A background in preventative maintenance and experience with various welding techniques, including manual and machine butt welding of poly pipe, is also desirable.

A strong focus on safety and commitment to company values is a must, as is a strong work ethic and problem-solving skills.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

• Post-trade welding competencies and experience, specifically in MMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding)
• Knowledge of and expertise in maintaining pumps, compressors, and valve systems
• Current High-Risk Work Licences such as Forklift (LF), Cabin Gantry Crane (CB), Elevated Work Platform (WP), remote Gantry Crane (LBG), Confined Space, Working at Heights, Dogging and Rigging.
• Proficiency in Word, Excel and CMMS (JDE, Oracle or SAP).
