Marine Rescue NSW (MRNSW) is an essential emergency service that protects the NSW community by providing marine search and rescue response, monitoring responding to maritime radio communications, and delivering safety education programs. At the heart of our organisation is more than 3,000 active volunteer members, organised into 46 geographic units. We work with other emergency services, particularly the NSW Police Force, and promote boating and water safety through community events, education, and engagement activities.
We now have an exciting and rare opportunity for a dedicated and highly driven individual to join our team as our newest Commissioner and lead and carry forward our organisation to achieve the highest level of care for our community and the overall goals of the board and our stakeholders.
The opportunity:
In this role, you will lead and inspire our members and team to achieve the organisational mission and vision, operating as a world-class volunteer marine rescue organisation. As our Commissioner, you will be the strategic leader and decision maker on policies and programs, and you will ensure the effectiveness of our organisation by working together with the board to set our strategic direction.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop strategies and programs to grow our membership and capabilities to; increase our presence on the waterways; provide an increased service delivery to the boating community and enhance the organisation's profile.
- Represent and advocate for our organisation on high-level government Boards and Committees.
- Lead and inspire our members and team in all aspects of work to develop and deliver our plans, strategies and activities, ensuring that targets are met and that budget, time and skills are directed to their most effective use.
- Drive financial sustainability and long-term capacity by identifying and securing appropriate funding, liaising with the government, gaining philanthropic support, generating revenue and pursuing business strategies aligned with our vision and purpose.
- Ensure the organisation compiles with all statutory, regulatory and policy requirements and that regulatory and operational risks are identified and mitigated.
- Represent our organisation to partners, stakeholders and the public to ensure that we are positively presented in media and public platforms.

You'll be great in this role because:
You will be highly proactive and driven, capable of strategic thinking at an organisational level. Furthermore, you will possess a minimum of three years of experience working in a senior executive leadership role where you were responsible for people management, revenue generation and business operation.
It is essential that you have a strong understanding of the legislative framework that the organisation works within and, ideally, strong pre-existing networks with both state and federal levels of government. Comfort with the drafting of ministerial communications to the highest levels of government is also essential.
Your skills in relationship development will assist you with a variety of stakeholders, including the board, various paid and volunteer members of the Marine Rescue organisation, and partners such as the NSW Police Force, NSW Maritime, Australian Maritime Safety Authority, State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Ambulance, VRA Rescue NSW and NSW Surf Life Saving.
Above all, you will be an empathic individual who is also a people person with a strong understanding of volunteers, volunteer organisations and their intricacies, and who can inspire others and take them on the journey.
