About CAWLS
Two exciting opportunities exists at Central Australian Women’s Legal Service to join our legal team. One based in Alice Springs and one based in Tennant Creek.
CAWLS is seeking a self-motivated candidate with high-order advocacy and written communication and problem-solving skills, demonstrated legal practice experience and a strong work ethic. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about improving access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly.
CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated team committed to providing representation and excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.
Under the direction of the Principal Solicitor, the solicitor will be engaged in legal advice, casework, outreach clinics, information and referral, community engagement, community legal education and law reform.
Excellent ongoing training and on the job support will be provided to the successful applicant.
Total effective package includes: base salary, superannuation, leave loading, relocation assistance and salary packaging options. Annual progression within the salary scale is subject to satisfactory performance.
About the Roles
As a Solicitor with Central Australian Women’s Legal Service you will be working in a small but busy and tight knit team. You will assist Senior Solicitors and have carriage of a number of your own matters.
You will be responsible for:
- Client management
- Drafting court documents & correspondence
- Attending Court
- File management
- Attending Domestic Violence drop in appointments
- Ensuring deadlines are met
- Working closely with senior solicitors and the Practice Manager
- Maintaining an accurate and up to date records and some data entry.

About You

- Minimum 1-3 years post-admission experience in a broad range of matters, particularly in family law, civil and Family and Domestic violence;
- Experience working with groups who experience disadvantage;

- The ability and inclination to take initiative;
- Resilience (as you will be dealing with sensitive and confronting material);
- Have superior written and verbal communication skills;
- Be able to work independently and in a team;

- Willingness to learn;
- Ability to dissect complex legal issues and apply them to real life scenarios; and
- Be respectful, non-judgmental and exhibit a trauma informed approach to client management.

- File management
- Ensuring deadlines are met
- Contributing to the development of Health Justice Partnerships
- Working closely with senior solicitors and the Practice Manager
