About Life in Nyirripi

About 440kms from Alice Springs, Nyirripi is known as both Waite Creek and Jitalparnta and was originally established in the 1970's. With an estimated population of 242 people, it is run primarily by a Community Government Council and contains approximately 44 community houses, all with air conditioning and maintained by the Council.

Locals enjoy a variety of activities, with football, softball, volleyball and basketball being popular favourites. This friendly rural town contains a number of different facilities for locals including a health centre, women's centre, community hall and primary school.

About the Opportunity

Central Desert Shire Council has a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced and self-motivated Essential Services Officer to join their team, based in Nyirripi.

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the delivery and maintenance of all Essential Services to the Community and to provide other services and assistance to the Council as required.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include:

  • Assisting in the management and maintenance of the community's Power and Water, Sewerage;
  • Responding to breakdowns and emergency faults;
  • Implementing the written work plan of the daily, monthly and quarterly Power and Water duties;
  • Undertaking additional works where possible under instruction;
  • Implementing a work plan for the weekly duties which address the services requirements;
  • Undertaking and collecting Power and Water meter reading duties;
  • Providing accurate and timely reports to the Shire Service Manager; and
  • Mentoring all trainees and employees within your area of responsibility.

To be successful in this role, you will have the experience and ability to meet Power & Water requirements as well as relevant trade qualifications (i.e. electrician, mechanic, and plumber) and/or significant experience in a similar ESO role.

As you will be working with Aboriginal people that speak Anmatjere, Arrernte, Alyawarra and/or Warlpiri as a first language, an awareness of issues affecting Aboriginal people in remote locations and ability to operate effectively in a cross-cultural environment is essential.

You will have experience in managing and maintaining the operations of essential services plus well developed communication skills in order to liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders. Due to the nature of the position, you will also require a reasonable level of fitness as well as a current driver's licence and the ability to drive a 4WD. A current first aid certificate or the ability to obtain one is also essential.

Ideally, you will have experience supervising numbers of employees over a range of activities as well as the ability to undertake works repairs and maintenance in one or more of the civil, mechanical and construction areas.
