About the Organisation

The Aboriginal community of Walgett lobbied for an Aboriginal Medical Service in the late 70's. In 1986, Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service (WAMS) opened its doors, and the Board of Directors moved a resolution to provide primary health care to all people in the community. This has been the case ever since, with 40% of clients being non-Aboriginal.

Services offered include: public health, family health, sexual health, dental health, mental health and GP Clinical Services. The not-for-profit organisation also provides a diverse range of health programs, including drug and alcohol.

About the Opportunity

Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service has an fantastic opportunity for a Registered Nurse (Family Centred) to work within their friendly and dedicated team in Walgett.

In this varied role, you will be leading and coordinating a multi-disciplinary team of Aboriginal Health Workers and Allied Health Care Teams in the provision of high quality Family Centred Primary Health Care to outlying communities.

More specifically, some of your daily duties will include:

  • Assessing community needs and resources available and setting priorities;
  • Planning, implementing and evaluating programs designed to meet the needs of the community;
  • Contributing to the quality improvement process and ensuring the service works within this framework at all times;
  • Maintaining statistics in accordance with performance indicators;
  • Assisting staff to ensure a high quality of client care is provided to communities;
  • Liaising with other staff to ensure the safety of clients, the effective use of resources and adequate supplies are maintained; and
  • Maintaining the accurate and current documentation of matters concerning clients and staff.

To be successful in this position, you will be a Registered Nurse with experience providing Primary Health Care across a range of settings. You will also require experience in working with Aboriginal communities and in program planning.

You will be a natural leader with the ability to motivate a multi-disciplinary Primary Health Care Outreach Team as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable you to liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders. A current driver's licence is also essential.

Although it is not essential, qualifications in community health, education or mental health would be highly regarded, as would a midwifery and/or early childhood qualification. Good report and submission writing skills and computer proficiency with skills in Works for Windows would also be desired.

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF WALGETT AMS

WAMS was established in June 1986 after many years of lobbying to provide a service to the Aboriginal community. The first Board of Directors moved a resolution to treat ALL people. Currently, 40% of our clients are non-Aboriginal. WAMS was originally located on the corner of Fox and Sutherland St with a staff of five and in 1989 moved to their current location in Pitt St.

WAMS now has a staff of over one hundred (including visiting personnel) making it one of the largest employers in Walgett and they endeavour to support their staff in whatever way they can and offer personal and professional development with training to upskill and fun days to boost morale and comradeship.
