About the Organisation

New Horizons is a progressive not-for-profit community based organisation that has been operating since 1981.

The organisation provides services in supported accommodation, supported employment and aged care for over 2,200 people. New Horizon's non-profit commercial packaging service specialises in providing solutions for commercial clients while providing employment for people with a disability.

The organisation's head office is in North Ryde, however services are provided in the Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Blue Mountains and Northern Rivers regions. New Horizons is growing rapidly, with approximately 450 employees in NSW.

About the Opportunity

New Horizons has an exciting opportunity for a part time Community Worker to join the team on the Central Coast for the new Indigenous Community Support service to be based at both Gosford and Gorokan.

The program will support aboriginal community members and their families by providing links and referrals to a range of mainstream and aboriginal services which may include; welfare and social support, family, health (including drug and alcohol services), housing, child care and legal. By better linking aboriginal people to community services, this program will support social inclusion and community cohesion and will assist in closing the gap in access to services between aboriginal and non-aboriginal Australians.

A Part time Community Consultant and a Part time Community Worker will be employed to support this new program. The roles will cover the development of relationships with other service providers and promoting access and pathways to their services. A key part of the program will be the provision of internet to aboriginal community members as a means of accessing information, resources and supports.

To be successful in the Community Worker role, you will have an understanding of Aboriginal traditional culture and history, and the impact that culture including social and emotional issues and history has on the provision of health services to Aboriginal clients. Due to the nature of this role, applicants are required to be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. In this position an applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1997, as amended.

For this role you will either hold, or be willing to undertake, qualifications in Social Work, Community Welfare, Mental Health or equivalent and have an understanding of the Disability Service Standards and/or Mental Health Standards.

For this role, you should be an empathetic individual, with strong communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work in challenging situations.  You will need a current NSW driver’s licence and your own vehicle. An enthusiasm for the industry, and a genuine desire to help others and improve the community, is essential. Employment in this position is subject to a satisfactory Working With Children check and Criminal Record check.
