At the heart of MRNSW lies an impressive force of more than 3,000 active volunteer members, united in their mission to protect and serve. These dedicated individuals are organized into 45 geographic units, forming a powerful network that collaborates seamlessly with other essential emergency services, most notably the esteemed NSW Police Force. We now have an exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and committed individual to become an integral part of our team as the esteemed Zone Commander on the picturesque North NSW Coast. This full-time role promises an exciting journey filled with possibilities and the chance to make a significant impact in our organisation.

About the Opportunity

As a valued team member, you will report directly to the esteemed Deputy Commissioner of Operations, assuming a pivotal role in the seamless delivery of Marine Rescue support for waterway users. In this dynamic position, you will be entrusted with a diverse range of responsibilities, including ensuring the readiness of our dedicated staff and members for any operational challenges that may arise.

Your exceptional leadership skills will play a key role in fostering a strong safety culture and promoting engagement with our esteemed members and stakeholders. Together, we will uphold our commitment to excellence in incident response and maintain our unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of all those who traverse our waterways.

The North Zone encompasses 16 Marine Rescue Units from Forster to the NSW/QLD Border including Lord Howe Island. The successful applicant will need to reside within the Zone and is expected to routinely travel to Unit locations as part of the requirements of the role.

Some of your core duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Ensure the delivery of operational training covering marine drills, operational readiness inspections, vessel readiness, rosters and coordination and other preparedness and response capabilities, skills and knowledge;
  • Continually improving MRNSW operations and associated services such as by developing, implementing and reviewing policies and procedures for safe and up-to-date operations
  • Reviewing incident responses and investigating internal incidents while ensuring post-incident support and welfare services are provided to MRNSW responders;
  • Support MRNSW engagement with the media and stakeholders, including providing operational reporting and media comments, building and maintaining local relationships with key stakeholders, and representing the organisation effectively in a range of contexts; and
  • Work with the Zone Duty Operations Managers and the Zone Training Manager, providing leadership support to Marine Rescue Units and their executives to foster an inclusive culture and safe workplace.

About You

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual with a wealth of experience, particularly in operational leadership, ideally within the marine or rescue domain. A primary focus of this role will be cultivating a robust safety culture, setting the bar for performance expectations, and offering guidance and support in identifying and managing workplace health, safety, and wellbeing risks.

Your effectiveness as a communicator and impeccable interpersonal skills will be key assets in this role. Additionally, your distinguished background in operational leadership will be evident, along with your extensive knowledge of governance and regulatory oversight. You will demonstrate a profound understanding of risk-based operations and compliance, ensuring our operations align with best practices and legal requirements.

Building strong and harmonious relationships within our organisation and with external partners will be a key aspect of your responsibilities. Your ability to foster collaboration and garner support will be founded on a genuine appreciation and understanding of volunteer-based community service and the essential role it plays. By spearheading high-quality operational outcomes within budgetary constraints, you will make significant contributions to the MRNSW leadership team, ensuring resources are utilized in a fiscally efficient and purpose-driven manner.

Please note: As this role requires a lot of travel, you will need to have a valid and current driver’s licence.
