Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service, situated in the stunning East Pilbara region, we provide culturally sensitive healthcare services in remote Aboriginal communities. Since our beginnings in Jigalong in 1994, we've expanded to provide care for communities across our region and now have over 100 staff. Our main clinic is based in Newman, just 2.5 hours from Jigalong.

Have the opportunity to join us and help support and promote this vision within our organisation as our full-time Director of Community Health based in Newman, WA.

The Opportunity

As our Director of Community Health, you will ensure the smooth running of our health centre’s community health function. Leading our community health staff, you will lead by example, showcasing your trauma-informed care and effective practice models.

Leading staff from our main facility in Newman, you will also lead community health staff in our regional clinics in Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, and Kunawarritji.

We provide a holistic range of primary and community health services, and you will drive the direction and execution of our community health services.

Our community health services include: mental health services, environmental health, stop-smoking assistance, transport to and from medical appointments, NDIS services, social and emotional wellbeing, and health education. 

As Director of Community Health you will be managing all community health promotion programs like SEWB, Youth, NDIS, ITC, and environmental health.

As Director of Community Health Programs, you will work alongside the leaders for each of these health programs, and ensure that they run effectively and to budget while maintaining culturally appropriate methodologies and practices at all times.

This is a dynamic and varied role, as we provide healthcare for remote Aboriginal Communities, no two days will be the same. Some travel to our other remote area clinics may be required.

As a member of our senior leadership, you will also work alongside other senior leaders and may be involved in funding applications or setting up new community health initiatives.

Newman is a town in the Pilbara, serving as a gateway to Karijini National Park and Mount Whaleback Mine. Located 1,184 km northeast of Perth, it offers easy access to natural wonders and tours of the world's largest open-cut iron ore mine. The region also offers adventures like Eagle Rock Falls and access to Karlamilyi National Park, as well as a stunning wildflower season from July to September. In Karijini National Park, you can explore stunning gorges, including Dales, Kalamina, Weano, Hancock, Joffre, and Knox Gorges, along with scenic lookouts.

The Remuneration and Benefits

When you join PAMS, you will earn a generous salary circa $150,000 - $200,000, negotiable dependent on skills and experience, plus super and great benefits.

About You

As our Director of Community Health Programs, you will have a strong background in social work, community service or similar, with experience in community health.

Your strong understanding of the importance of culture in our community and in PAMS’s operations will be important, as is the value you place on cultural knowledge and practices. Your experience in providing trauma-informed care and a person-centred approach will be invaluable in this role.

You will have:

  • A diploma or higher in social work, psychology, mental health, community services, or similar
  • Experience in a community health leadership role, including strategic development
  • Experience in providing trauma-informed care, and training others to do the same
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience living and working in remote Aboriginal communities is preferred
