About CAWLS

CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated integrated team committed to providing excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, non-legal wrap around support, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.

CAWLS is seeking a self-motivated candidate with high-order advocacy and written communication and problem-solving skills, demonstrated legal practice experience and a strong work ethic. We are looking for candidates who are passionate about improving access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly. 

Total effective package includes: base salary, superannuation, leave loading and salary packaging options. Annual progression within the salary scale is subject to satisfactory performance.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Under the direction of the Management team, the client support worker will assist the Tennant Creek lawyers to provide services for CAWLS clients on a needs basis. You will also assist the lawyers with legal administration support.

You will be responsible for:

  • Provide non legal support to CAWLS clients at various locations including in the office, at court and interagency meetings.
  • Facilitate assisted referrals and other services and support, based on the needs of the clients, including assisted travel to and from appointments.
  • Assisting lawyers with legal administration support as directed.
  • File management, collection of data and entry into database.
  • Provide backup support for the receptionist.
  • Maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Maintaining a harmonious workplace by working closely with the CAWLS team.

ABOUT YOU:

Our client support worker must have a passion for assisting women to gain access to the legal system so their rights are considered, respected and prioritised.

  • Any previous experience in a similar role.
  • Experience working with groups who experience disadvantage;
  • Empathy and sensitivity to CALD, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women;
  • The ability and inclination to take initiative;
  • Resilience (as you will be dealing with sensitive and confronting material);
  • Have superior written and verbal communication skills;
  • Be able to work independently and in a team;
  • An eye for details and strategic thinking;
  • Willingness to learn;
  • Be respectful, non-judgmental and exhibit a trauma informed approach to client management.
