How You’ll Make a Difference

Sunrise Health Service is looking for multiple full-time Specialist Nurses (Maternal and Child Health) to join the team based in Katherine, NT, working throughout the Big Rivers region.

This pivotal role, reporting to the Child and Family Health Coordinator, involves delivering and implementing the Maternal and Early Childhood Sustained Home Visiting program (MECSH) and supporting families within the communities served by Sunrise Health.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting mothers and families from pregnancy through to the child turning three years old
  • Guiding families using a strengths-based approach to enhance coping and parenting skills
  • Establishing supportive relationships within families and the community, including promoting maternal-infant bonding
  • Providing primary health care, health education, and facilitating health checks including vaccinations
  • Promoting positive parent-infant interactions and delivering a structured child development and parent education program
  • Encouraging parents to be future-orientated and increase their capacity to parent effectively
  • Supporting families to improve problem-solving skills and access community resources
  • Practicing trauma-informed care and maintaining cultural safety and awareness

What You’ll Bring to the Team

To be considered for either position, you must hold valid AHPRA registration as a General Nurse, Registered Nurse, Nurse/Midwife and/or Child Health Nurse.

Other requirements include:

  • Highly developed communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Unrestricted driver’s license with (ideally) the ability to operate a manual vehicle
  • First aid certification
  • Current OCHRE clearance or willingness to obtain
  • Acceptable vaccination status to work with vulnerable people in the NT
  • Experience working in an Aboriginal health context (not essential)
  • Satisfactory criminal history check
  • The right to live and work in Australia

About the Big Rivers Region

The Big Rivers region (a 3 hour drive from Darwin) begins south of Kakadu National Park encompassing Pine Creek, then extends over 500km south to Kalkaringi and stretches across the width of the Territory between the Western Australia and Queensland borders. The region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 square kilometres and accounting for an area greater than that covered by Germany. The region consists of a number of varied natural environments including vast rivers, tropical forests, rocky escarpments and savannah plains.
