About the Housing and Accommodation Support Initiative (HASI)

The Housing and Accommodation Support Initiative (HASI) is an innovative partnership program between NSW Health, Housing NSW and the non-government organisation (NGO) sector that provides housing linked to clinical and psychosocial rehabilitation services for people with a range of levels of psychiatric disability.

HASI is designed to assist people with mental health problems and disorders requiring accommodation support to participate in the community, maintain successful tenancies, improve their quality of life and most importantly to assist in their recovery from mental illness.

HASI operates as a three-way partnership in service delivery:

  • Accommodation support and rehabilitation associated with disability, provided by Non-Government Organisations (funded by NSW Health).
  • Clinical care and rehabilitation provided by specialist mental health services.
  • Long-term, secure, and affordable housing and property and tenancy management services, provided by public and community housing (funded by Housing NSW). 

About the Opportunity

Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia (PRA) is seeking a dedicated HASI Support Worker to join their team in Batemans Bay, NSW in a full time capacity.

Within this role, you will be responsible for working with adults in the community with a mental illness, developing and implementing psychosocial rehabilitation programs and opportunities, with a focus on finding or maintaining affordable, appropriate accommodation.

More specifically, some of your direct case-by-case duties will include:

  • Developing skills for managing home and finances;
  • Exploring mainstream community opportunities including sport, leisure, fitness, recreation, education and employment;
  • Mentoring and peer support;
  • Developing skills for the self management of mental and general health;
  • Advocacy; and
  • Joint care planning with the mental health team, private Psychiatrist, Psychologist and/or GP.

The successful applicants will have tertiary qualifications in Human Services or Behavioural Sciences, and a strong commitment to consumer driven recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation. Ideally you will have a demonstrable knowledge of mental health / psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery orientated services. An understanding of the Disability Services Act and the Anti-Discrimination Act will be advantageous, but not essential.

You will require excellent interpersonal skills, allowing you to communicate and problem solve calmly in stressful situations. In addition you will be a self-motivated team player with the ability to solve problems, prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and set realistic goals in a logical manner.

In addition, candidates with demonstrate leadership experience, knowledge of group programs and the capacity to support individuals will be favoured.

An enthusiasm for working with people with a mental illness, and a genuine desire to help others and improve the community is essential!
