About Ngaanyatjarra Council

Ngaanyatjarra Council Aboriginal Corporation (NCAC) was incorporated in 1981 with the aim of supporting the development of all Ngaanyatjarra people. At the core of this work was assisting the Ngaanyatjarra Communities to be strong and sustainable with reliable essential services, air transport, bookkeeping, agency and road transport, fuel distribution, health services, community services and improved housing.

The Ngaanyatjarra Council represents the interests of around 2000 Ngaanyatjarra, Pintupi and Pitjantjatjara people living in 12 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia.

Today, the Ngaanyatjarra Council is one of the largest Indigenous Corporations in Australia and has grown to be the major representative body for the Ngaanyatjarra people.

About the Opportunities

Ngaanyatjarra Council is currently looking for multiple enthusiastic couples to join their team as Store Managers, working in the Jameson or Mantamaru Community, situated 125 km east of Warburton, WA.

Sharing management duties as a couple, you will be responsible for the full day-to-day operations of the store, working with and learning from local Aboriginal community members to maximise employment and training opportunities.

In general, your duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the store
  • Managing the ordering and receiving of stock, accounting for timelines to ensure necessary stock is available when needed;
  • Maintaining the proper filing of all invoices and orders received or raised by the store;
  • Receiving and thoroughly checking all goods ordered and received to ensure appropriate quality, quantity, and price;
  • Providing effective leadership, management, supervision and on-the-job training to Aboriginal store workers; and
  • Implementing any policies of the Community Council which relate to the operation of the store.

About You

To be successful, you'll need demonstrated experience in the retail sector, strong financial skills and an understanding of stock control principles. If applying as a couple, these skills will need to be strong across the two of you, though transferrable skills will be considered, provided at least one partner has relevant experience.

You'll be highly organised, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively manage indigenous staff members, where cultural norms and community development priorities may differ from your own.

Although not essential, any experience working in remote areas or with Aboriginal communities will be highly regarded. You'll require a demonstrated ability to work with traditional Aboriginal people in a “dry” community, as well as a commitment to the principles of Aboriginal self-determination at a community level.

It will be important to have the confidence and resilience to work in, what can often be an undeniably challenging environment. You will need to be flexible to the needs of the store and comfortable handling environmental issues such as heat, dust and dirt.

About the Benefits

You'll be joining a welcoming and dynamic organisation. In return for your hard work and dedication, you will be rewarded with generous base salaries plus a host of outstanding benefits per person as listed below:

  • Annual Remote Allowance
  • Salary Packaging available
  • 8 weeks leave
  • 17.5% leave loading on Annual leave
