How You'll Make a Difference:

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) is looking for a full-time Child and Youth Counsellor based in Cairns, QLD.

As a Child and Youth Counsellor, your primary responsibility will be to deliver specialised counselling and crisis intervention services to children and young people who have experienced domestic and family violence. 

You will work closely with the CRDVS team and other agencies to ensure a coordinated and effective response to the needs of these vulnerable clients.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing tailored face-to-face counselling, group work, and crisis support for children and young people, using a range of modalities, including Trauma Informed Practice.
  • Supporting carers of child witnesses by offering information and support in both individual and group settings to foster a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Advocating for children and young people and working collaboratively with other organisations to enhance service delivery and community awareness.
  • Maintaining confidential records of client work, including case management plans, reports, and assessments.

This role also involves participating in community education and group work initiatives to raise awareness of the effects of domestic and family violence on children and young people

What You'll Bring to the Team:

To be successful in this role, you will need tertiary qualifications in behavioural or social sciences and significant experience in providing counselling and support to children and young people. 

Additionally, the following skills and background will be essential:

  • Extensive knowledge of child and adolescent developmental stages and the impacts of domestic and family violence.
  • A comprehensive understanding of gendered analysis in family violence and what this means for children and young people
  • Demonstrated experience in applying various counselling models, with a strong understanding of Trauma Informed Practice.
  • Comprehensive understanding of different counselling models and their theoretical frameworks, including trauma-informed practice
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and maintain professional relationships with government and non-government agencies.
  • High-level communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective advocacy and reporting.

Please Note: All applicants must hold (or obtain) a current C Class driver's licence, a Working With Children Card and a formal police criminal history check.
