How You'll Make a Difference:

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) is looking for a part-time First Nations Engagement Worker based in Cairns, QLD.

As a First Nations Engagement Worker, you will be pivotal in guiding the CRDVS team across multiple locations to enhance their work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll mentor and coach staff to build cultural competence, develop and implement culturally safe policies, and engage with local communities to foster collaboration and reduce domestic and family violence.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting team members by providing guidance on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices
  • Mentoring and coaching staff to build capacity in culturally excellent practice
  • Collaborating with the CEO to implement culturally safe organisational policies
  • Connecting with communities to foster collaboration and engagement
  • Enhancing community awareness of domestic and family violence
  • Participating actively in case management meetings

This role requires travel to the Tablelands and Mossman regions. Your community standing, experience, and respect for cultural customs will be essential, alongside your ability to manage relationships with warmth, empathy, and clear boundaries.

What You'll Bring to the Team:

To qualify, you will need tertiary qualifications in behavioural or social sciences. A minimum of two years of Level 5 experience in domestic and family violence or a related sector will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural customs
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching staff
  • Understanding of high-risk indicators and protective factors
  • Experience in establishing positive relationships with partner organisations
  • Strong communication skills

Please Note: All applicants must hold (or obtain) a current C Class driver's licence, a Working With Children Card and a formal police criminal history check. Additionally, applicants must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, as this is a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
