Gurindji Country: The Birthplace of Aboriginal Land Rights

On 23 August 1966, Vincent Lingiari led the Wave Hill Walk-off, a historic protest that ignited the Aboriginal Land Rights movement in Australia. The Gurindji people’s courageous stand against unfair working conditions and land dispossession marked the beginning of a powerful campaign for justice. After nine years of strikes, the Gurindji people's determination secured a brighter future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, marking a pivotal moment in Australian history.

Each August, we gather in Gurindji Country for the Gurindji Freedom Day Festival, a major event celebrating culture, music, and history. In 2014, Native Title was determined over Kalkaringi, with Gurindji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC as the Prescribed Body Corporate, working to improve the social and economic well-being of the community.
