The Opportunity
Circular Head Council is looking for a full-time Town Planner based in Smithton, Tasmania.
Reporting to the Manager Planning and Regulatory Services, this role supports statutory and strategic planning functions, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation while delivering exceptional service to stakeholders.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Processing development applications professionally and promptly
- Providing advice on the Land Use and Planning Approvals Act 1993 and the Tasmanian Planning Scheme
- Conducting site inspections to confirm accuracy and compliance
- Researching, interpreting, and applying relevant legislation
- Liaising with government and non-government agencies to ensure compliance and contemporary practices
- Assisting in strategic planning projects and policy development
- Representing Council in Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal matters when required
- Delivering high-level customer service to internal and external stakeholders
- Supporting resource-sharing initiatives with Waratah-Wynyard Council
- Maintaining efficient systems for responding to inquiries and monitoring applications
- Adhering to Council policies and procedures while promoting its values and positive image
- Continuously improving work methods to enhance efficiency and service delivery

What You Need
To qualify, you will need formal qualifications acceptable for membership to the Planning Institute of Australia as a Town Planner and a current driver’s license. A minimum of demonstrated experience in strategic planning projects or a related role will also be essential. Additionally, you must be willing to undertake a Police Check.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Experience in or a broad knowledge of local government
- Knowledge of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme
- Proficiency in GIS applications and the Microsoft Office suite
- Strong knowledge of planning and development legislation and associated statutory processes
- Ability to interpret planning legislation and policies to achieve equitable outcomes
- Well-developed analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills
